PNR is an abbreviation for “Passenger Name Record”. Basically it shows the current status of your train ticket reservation. It is an individual and unique data which contains the details of a passenger or a group of passenger and is saved in the huge database of Indian Railways Computer Reservation System(IR-CRS).
So, at the time of booking a train ticket, a person has to fill his/her basic details like Name, Age, Gender, Time & Date of journey, Berth Preference and this data is stored with Indian Railways Computer Reservation System(IR-CRS).
It is printed at the top of a train ticket, whether its an e-ticket or a counter ticket. The 10 digit number is uniquely assigned against details like Name, Age, Gender of the passenger, Details of the Train like Train No. Coach & Seat Number, Class of Travel, Arrival & Departure Station, Payment Details like Train Fare, Mode of Payment, Transaction ID.
Well, you can check it anytime you want after booking your ticket, but to get most precise/accurate status, you need to check it 4-6 hours before the train’s schedule departure from origin station.

Check PNR Status in Final Reservation Chart :-
Final Reservation Chart is generally prepared before 4-6 hours of train’s schedule departure from origin station. You can find it pasted on notice boards of railway station platforms.
